Margaret Alexander Edwards: The Legacy Continues

Margaret Alexander (later Margaret A. Edwards) with teen students at the Pratt Library

Margaret Alexander Edwards was a beloved librarian whose intellectual gifts and enormous talent shaped young adult librarianship at Enoch Pratt Free Library and across the nation. Her influence is very much present in young adult services today. Her book The Fair Garden and the Swarm of Beasts is still in print and a must read for young adult librarians. Margaret A. Edwards, in her early years, drove a horse drawn Book Buggy around the city streets, bring books to children and adults alike. Her zeal and passion for books lives on through her Trust.

The Margaret A. Edwards Trust provided seed money for the first “Books for the Beast” Conferences. Since then, the conference has been self-sustaining. The conference brings librarians, teachers, and lovers of Young Adult literature and young people together in a daylong celebration of reading and discussing books for the “swarm of beasts” that Mrs. Edwards so skillfully championed.
